Samurai Champloo is a Japanese anime television series broadcasted in Japan in 2004 and 2005. The Samurai Champloo series was created and director by a Japanese anime filmmaker Shinichiro Watanabe, who also created a popular series Cowboy Bebop in late 1990s. Samurai Champloo was accepted well in Japan, it was later translated into English and other languages and was broadcasted in the United States, Canada, around Europe, in Australia and New Zealand.
The Samurai Champloo is a cross-genre style anime with a whole set up happening in feudal Japan of the samurai time, but with some elements of the modern time, including graffiti, gangs, and rap and hip-hop music. The plot revolves around three main characters: Fuu, Mugen, and Jin. Fuu, who's a teenage girl and working as a waitress in a tea house, tricks Mugen and Jin to follow her to some distant place in Japan, looking for a mysterious samurai, "who smells like sunflowers". Mugen is a wondering sword for hire with an unconventional and extravagant fighting style, which might be comparing to break dancing and capoeira at the same time. Jin, in his turn is a ronin educated and trained in traditional samurai ways and behaving appropriately, being calm and cool.
While travelling together, they manage to build a sort of friendship and overcome numerous obstacles. The samurai they're after turns to be Fuu's father (which she was suspecting from the very beginning), who left his family in order to protect them from his enemies, but before meeting him, they have a whole lot of adventures to enjoy.
The name "Champloo" comes from the word "chanpuru" used in Okinawa. It means "to hash" or "to mix" and also is a name of a stir-dry dish. Samurai Champloo can be roughly translated as "Samurai Remix" or "Samurai Mix Up".
